Add the Allinaa chatbot to a Joomla website

Written by the Allinaa team · Updated

Joomla is self-hosted, so nothing limits what code a site can carry: the Allinaa line can go into the template or come from an extension. The decision is about what survives updates. This guide gives both routes for the current Joomla versions, Joomla 6 and the supported Joomla 5, and names the cache step that people forget.

Template file or extension

The template route is a one-line edit of the template's index.php, just before the closing body tag. It is quick, and a template update can overwrite it; if you keep your own child template or override, the edit survives. The extension route is an extension from the Joomla ecosystem that adds custom code to every page; you paste the line into its settings and updates of the template leave it alone. Pick the extension if someone else updates the site, the template edit if you control the template.

Get your code

You need your own code first. Sign up at bot.allinaa.com/start for the 14-day free trial, confirm your e-mail and follow the setup wizard; step 5, "Install", shows one line:

<script src="https://bot.allinaa.com/widget.js" data-bot-id="your-bot-id" defer></script>

Route 1: the template's index.php

  1. Open your active template's index.php (for the exact path of your template, check in Joomla's documentation or ask the template's author).
  2. Paste the line just before the closing body tag and save.
  3. Clear Joomla's cache so visitors get the new page.

Route 2: an extension that adds code to every page

  1. Install an extension that places custom scripts on every page; extensions are installed from a zip in the administrator.
  2. Paste the line into its "footer" or "body end" setting and save.
  3. Clear the cache and open the site.

There is no Allinaa extension in the Joomla Extensions Directory today, so any extension of that kind that you trust will do; what matters is that it prints the tag unchanged.

Multilingual Joomla sites

A Joomla site with several languages needs the line once; the assistant answers in the visitor's language within the languages you chose in your Allinaa cabinet (three on Standard, all supported languages on Premium). See choosing chatbot languages.

Check the installation

Check from both sides. As a visitor: open the live site in a private window, look for the button in a bottom corner and open a second page, so you know it is not limited to one. From Allinaa: click Check my site in the cabinet; it reads your homepage and up to two linked pages and answers found, not found or unreachable. The status also turns to installed by itself the first time the assistant loads on a page of your site.

Missing after a template update? Paste the line again or move to the extension route. The troubleshooting page has the general causes.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Allinaa extension for Joomla?

Not in the Joomla Extensions Directory today. Use the template edit or any extension that adds custom code to every page.

Where in index.php does the line go?

Just before the closing body tag.

Will a template update remove the chatbot?

It can overwrite an edited index.php. A child template, an override or an extension survives updates.

Do I need to clear the cache?

Yes, after either route, so visitors get the new page.
